The creation of the world according to the folklore of the Miao people revolves around the myth of Butterfly Mother. Central among many mythical Ancestors, Butterfly Mother was impregnated by the froth of breaking waves, and laid twelve eggs upon the boughs of a sweet gum tree. Over the course of twelve years, the eggs would hatch into various animals of the zodiac, as well as a boy called JiangYang and his sister, considered the procreators of the human race. Consequently, the Miao people consider the butterfly the creator of all living things.
The Miao people also believe that everything, animate or inanimate, is “born”, and possesses a spirit; be it the mountains, rivers, and creatures, as well as metals, plows, and drums. Because of this, it is common to find elements of their culture manifesting itself into the embroidery for bibs, handbags, hand-pleated skirts, leg wraps, headgear, and baby slings. Set upon a background of simple indigo dyed fabric using ancient techniques to treat the material to a point of glossy sheen, making the stunningly vibrant palette of the embroidery even more pronounced.
Taking inspiration from Miao culture and folklore, IKA seeks to modernize these traditional fashions and bring them forward fully into the 21st century. Combining these age old techniques with contemporary trends in women’s high fashion, we see the ancient myth of Butterfly Mother transcend into a chic Butterfly Momma. |

| IKA – HKFW Summer 2010 – the 2011 Summer Collection – Time of the Tides |
Rising and ebbing, tides come and go, at times silently receding, its periodic tranquility belying its furious nature. Surging forward in an unstoppable rage, it seems to claw at the shore, seeking to reclaim the land into its murky depths. The beauty of the marine world is resplendent with creatures great and small: from the Galapagos Islands and its vast array of species that heralded Darwin’s theory, to the Great Barrier Reef, a coral reef so expansive that it can be seen from space. From the Tubbataha Reef in the Sulu Sea, considered to be one of the most pristine coral reefs in the world, to the Blue Hole in the Belise Barrier Reef, whose underwater cliffs liken itself to the majestic Grand Canyon.
The threat that these natural wonders of the world now face has inspired IKA to create her Summer 2011 collection: The Time of Tides, possessing five themes personifying the distinct characteristics of our ocean.
UJUNG KULON
~ The Colours of the Sea
A myriad of dazzling hues and neon flashes contrasts starkly with the endless clear blue ocean found in the expansive coral reefs of Indonesia. Possessing the most diverse and abundant reefs in the world, there is no competition when it comes to the awe inspiring beauty that this underwater world holds.
Using dual sided two-colour batik printed fabrics of tropical colours, IKA seeks to recreate the beauty of the sea in layers of wavy frills, enhancing the flowing curves of the female body.
GALAPAGOS ISLANDS
~ The Tidal Zone
Defined as the area where the ocean interacts with the land, the tidal zone is a unique haven for all manner of unique creatures. It is where the past moves towards the future, where life on earth owes its existence to. The transformation from the flowing lines of the ocean into the hard, angular shapes of the shore is represented perfectly by the Galapagos Islands, where Darwin first made his observations on the incredible diversity of life, and the Theory of Evolution.
Using the rocky cliffs and manmade structures by the water’s edge as a juxtaposition of the hard and soft lines, IKA creates angular patterns and straight lines on soft flowing fabrics to show the unique nature of The Tidal Zone.
ISIMANGALISO
~ The Flow of Water
What define any shape in water is its soft, streamlined shapes caused by the weathering of currents. Inspired by the gentle shapes and muted colors of browns, greys, greens and blues of wetland creatures, IKA has created pieces that loosely hug the body, and liken themselves to the sandy dunes and murky shores of the African wetlands. In this serene collection of sleek silky sheen fabrics that lings to the body and bias cuts and uneven edges creating natural wavy folds, like soothing waves caressing the body.
EL VIZCAINO
~ The Shades of the Underwater World
Not all sea life comes in rich and splendid colours; at times there are only the sharp contrasts of black and white, likened to the skin of the killer whales and feathers of the penguins, and puffins. IKA uses soft fluid fabrics wrapped closely around the body that are bordered with sharp folds and pleat structures, all the while focusing on the range of shades of grey, black, and white.
SIAN KA’AN
~ The Tie Dye of Time
Another unique facet of water is its ability to refract light and send reflections and ripples across the ocean floor. These colors are blurred and dispersed, and IKA uses this theme to great effect with her tie dye collection. Using her signature effects of taping and piping across tie dye material, creating a 3D effect that allows the design patterns jump out of the fabric surface.
Save the ocean
The concern for the environment underlies IKA’s collection and at the same rejoices its beauty. She drew inspiration from the rich and diverse world of water while not forgetting that overzealous activities of mankind have imposed much stress on fragile earth.
The quality of the sea and ocean is a barometer to measure the health condition the whole plant earth. Human activities time and again threaten it, as with the recent oil spill off the Louisiana coast. Fish, mammals, birds of the sea are under stress by the callous actions of mankind. We must save the ocean; in doing so, we save the world. |

IKA – A/W 2010-2011 Global Sphere
World leaders and concerned citizens continue to focus on the issues of climate change and global warming as discussed and debated in the Copenhagen Summit. This captured IKA’s imagination for her collection and provided fuel for her creativity. She drew her design inspiration from the beauty of planet earth, its people and the galaxy beyond.
The past year has been turbulent for world weather patterns. It is time for us to reach out and embrace our changing planet, doing our part to save it from continuing destruction. The cold regions are warming, melting the glaciers at a rapid pace while the hot belts are facing intensified heat. Considering this, IKA dug deep within herself and drew out three elements for her theme of GLOBAL SPHERE: Modern Nomad, Nordic Winter and Geo Swirl.
Modern Nomad
The world grows smaller as our traveling increases. Today’s internationalism requires citizens of the global village to crisscross the world to stay connected with each other, very much like the nomadic travelers of the past, but in a modern setting. We are the Modern Nomads.
Inspired by the frozen arctic terrain and the sun drenched tropics, IKA tells the story of our modern nomadic life by combining geometrics mixed with stripes along with floral and animal skin fabrics in earthly winter tones of sky blues and tundra greens, sprinkled with magenta reds and sometimes patches of contrasting black and white. Warm soft wool wrap-coats are sometimes double-sided in long, medium and short lengths, conjuring a winter Lapland scene yet fitting perfectly into the modern urban scene.
Nordic Winter
Snowy peaks of the mountains and icy glacial masses are being diminished by the warming planet. IKA is taking inspiration from the low sun angle of Nordic Winter wonderland. This paints the landscape a glistening silken sheen, azure blue kissed with pink, different shades of glacial blue with burnt sienna, lilac purple and Midas gold. These are artistically combined and intertwined with shimmering metallic grays and chintz browns.
IKA continues to experiment with geometric, angular symmetry colliding with linear patterns from the past, elevating them to new artist heights. Metal elements glide and dot the creative pieces, clashing cultural jagged metal on smooth metallic surfaces like playing metal music.
Geo Swirl
Planet earth spins & swirls through the galaxy. Ika not only displays curvilinear but also linear lines, squares, triangles, trapezoids, rhombus and diamond shapes and forms found in the geological formations such as hexagonal volcanic rock columns evolved through millions of years or in newly formed snow flakes and ice crystals.
Fabrics of glittering stars on an incandescent sky with bursts of an occasional volcanic red send the ladies rocketing into figure hugging outfits or loose gear for the easy riders and urban cowgirls.
The juxtaposition of soft curves and hard lines give birth to new visual forms of harmony in IKA’s fashion vocabulary, toward the enhancement and accentuation of the woman’s figure while sometimes discreetly hiding the unwanted lumps, bumps and bulges. |
Press Release
INDONESIAN FASHION DESIGNER IKA PRESENTS “ONE LOVE” IN HONGKONG FASHION WEEK SUMMER 2009
Hong Kong, 14 July, 2009
For Ika, it’s never boring to create two subsequent collections in a year. She welcomes the excitement and challenge of exploring, selecting, and creating a new series of pieces.
Since 1985, the Hong Kong Fashion Week is where one would find Ika’s latest Summer and Winter collections. This has made her the longest standing fashion designer who has consistently produced a show in Hong Kong.
Fashion observers, media, and buyers commented that one can always find surprises in Ika’s Collection with unique and specific themes at each show. |
 |
Following the Autumn-Winter 09 theme “On The Desert Road to Alexandria” in which Egyptian culture was explored, this July the collection delves into the Caribbean as its theme, adopting the "ONE LOVE" title from legendary artist Bob Marley, presented at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center, in Wanchai, Hongkong on 7 July, 2009.
Ika enjoyed her research and exploration through the Caribbean and Jamaican islands, before launching the 40 set collection on stage.
In “ONE LOVE”, Ika was inspired by the relaxed and fun nature evident on the Caribbean islands. Ika has translated these feelings with multi~floral handwork combined with dynamic geometric lines. Colours ranging from the soft romantic nuances to bright and strong lines, merging colour play with unique finishing techniques which has been Ika’s trademark: the patchwork, slashing, piping, and embroidery coupled with the careful attention given to each and every piece. Ika combines fabrics normally never seen together in one garment, giving each a new unique twist. Some of these include lace patched over chiffon, piping or slashing techniques over lace, and stripes over jersey print.
With each Hong Kong Fashion Week, Ika’s collection is always one of the most anticipated shows as she unveils a new theme, packed with exciting research, vast exploration, and carefully selected music, merging them into a refined performance of creativity, entertainment, elegance, and romance, with a twist of wit.
As interesting as her collections are, Ika takes these opportunities to introduce and promote her fellow countrymen. Dewa Nugraha/ Nugie and Donnie Ardhia contribute their talents by working on the choreography of the models and stage presentation, while Alexa d’Heureuse and Ratih Dhamma Iswari earn their first taste of the catwalk away from home alongside other international models from France, USA, Russia, Khazakstan, Italy and Hongkong. All arrived home as celebrated choreographers and models. This exemplifies Ika’s love and dedication to Bali and Indonesia, a small repayment for the inspiration and color that her homeland has given her throughout her life.
ABOUT IKA
Ika is a fashion designer based in Hong Kong and Bali. She established the company under the name “BUTONI” in1983, which has since been a long, enriching journey to her success today, and her reputation in handwork and creativity. It was her wish to use only the name Ika (meaning ‘One Unity’ in Bahasa Indonesia), until the media began to popularize the combined name of Ika Butoni.
Ika is the founder and organizer of the well-known Bali Fashion Week. She is also a Senior Executive Committee member of the Hong Kong Fashion Designers’ Association. She is also the founder of numerous other organizations in Bali, such as BEDO, the Bali Export Development Organization.
ABOUT HONGKONG FASHION WEEK

Ika’s HKFW & WB 2008 collection press release
IKa’s catwalk collection presented at the recent Hong Kong Fashion Week and World Boutique 2008 inspired by the Arabic figure “8” brought in a full house of customers and followings.
Rooted in Ika’s signature style of intricate refinement and attention to details, she creatively incorporated the figure “8” into her pieces either in bold graphical forms or subtle never-ending curves of “8” intertwined as background patterns. |
 |
Her theme story, explained in the brochure handed out to each audience, read:
捌
In Chinese culture, certain numbers are believed to be auspicious (吉利) and some inauspicious (不利) based on the Chinese word that the number sounds similar to.
Eight
The word for “eight - 8” in Chinese Putonghua is pronounce bā which sounds similar to the word “fa” which means “fortune”, “prosper” or “wealth”. In the regional Cantonese dialect it is pronounce “baat” which also rhymes “faat”.
When a baby is born, eight numbers related to its birth are recorded – 2 for the year, two for the month, 2 for day and two for the time of the birth. When the child matures to adulthood, these 8 numbers are used by the matchmaker to find him/her a spouse whose 8 numbers is compatible. One school of fortune telling uses these 8 numbers to reveal the fortune and destiny of the person.
When two number eights are put together, 88, it resembles the abstract form of the Chinese character for double happiness, shuang xi, 喜喜, a popular decorative symbol (composed of two stylized喜 - xi, ‘joy’, ‘happiness’) frequently used in wedding celebrations.
Due to the auspicious nature of figure 8, Chinese people have a fixation on it. Car licenses, telephone numbers, bank numbers and credit card numbers with a figure 8 are highly sought after. Even the Summer Olympics in Beijing to be held in 2008 is scheduled to open on 8/8/08 at 8:08:08 p.m.
The figure 8 is basically two zeros put together, one on top of the other. Some people also think that it is associated with the symbol infinity (an 8 turned 90 degrees). If you write out the figure 8 you can keep going and never ending; indeed it is infinity.
The shape of figure 8 is round, smooth, continuous and never ending and symbolises prosperity, good fortune and double happiness when two eights - 88 - are put together.
Hence, when we wear clothing or jewellery bearing the symbol or motif of 8, it is believed that it will bring us good luck.
This winter collection takes on a rich dark tone, hue and colour – maroon, grape, violet, olive green, browns, blues, beige, mauve, taro, black & white, with occasion brights of orange, reds, fuchsia, lilac, etc. The large collection, from casualwear to eveningwear, from formal to fun, from simple to opulent, created from carefully placed & mixed of a myriad of fabrics and materials in tapes, ribbings, pipings on solid fabrics or sheer nets and occasionally just intertwined to form the fabric, is an evolution of “Ika’s theme”, now a famous “song” in the world of fashion.
Her men’s collection sprinkled amongst the women’s added an interesting dimension to the catwalk presentation. Features borrowed from the women’s collection, e.g. tapes, ribbings, holes are sparingly and carefully placed to make each piece unique. Every shirt and pant carries playful details such as magnetic “button” that snaps into place but itself. The Manchurian tunics added a touch of formalness to the men’s collection which is a statement of casual elegance embodied with characteristics.
When the show seemed to come to a natural end, Ika surprised her audience with a collection of her “flag story” introduced last year but played out in a more elaborate format this year. This time it was not one flag per outfit but two and the combinations carried special meaning. For example, the UK and China flag combination signified the signing of the agreement of the Hong Kong handover; the Hong Kong and US flag came together because of the currency peg, and Argentina and Brazil due to the football game. |
Ika

“JAVA” by Ika

From Heritage to Legacy
'From Heritage to Legacy'
Ika draws inspiration constantly from the people in her travel around the world. Her love of the fabric, the culture and the life in her homeland can be seen in her interpretation of them on the stage.
She started the show with the early morning greetings from the flora & fauna of the village, The music touched the morning dews before the stage moved to the hussle & bussle where life of the Kuta street began. The days were never quiet, there were always ceremonies, events & cultural dances going on in the life of Bali. Children looked most handsome and pretty in their adornments. Yet when the night fell, the Internatonal Fashion glazed Catwalks in hotels around Bali.
'From Heritage to Legacy'
Show dimulai dengan sambutan kokok ayam menyambut tibanya fajar.
'From Heritage to Legacy'
